AA's chokehold on recovery is part of the problem, as court ordered meetings are usually the only option.
Honestly, if a person approached me and asked for help with an addiction, I would probably suggest AA.......but with a caveat. AA has an unfortunate history of absolutely demomizing anyone who doesn't embrace the program. You were accused of being a dry drunk if you didn't work the program, or told that your addiction did too many push-ups in the parking lot for you to avoid relapse.
I bash AA because the program bashed me, or rather cultish fellowshippers bashed me, even accused me of trying to get struggling addicts killed by merely suggesting 12-step alternatives. Gratefully, I know plenty of 12-steppers that are very broad-minded and don't lean on the program like a religion. In my opinion, they've earned every bit of criticism they receive, but I'm happy to acknowledge the good they've done.
