Exactly. It also gives a lot of people a perceived degree of separation from the non-functional, sloppy drunk that's homeless or panhandling. It makes me think of people who separate their alcohol addiction from those who become addicted to other drugs because they cling to the lie that alcohol isn't a drug, and therefore makes them less flawed because they got hooked on the acceptable product instead of the evil, illegal drug.
