I had a dangerous addiction to alcohol, but as I further distance myself from that, other, less harmful addictions are relentlessly screaming to be satisfied. Your approach has been a successful way for me to neutralize these little cravings for caffeine or some nutritionally empty snack to shove into my mouth in order to placate an imaginary need. I still screw up and stumble when I'm not managing stress well or I get a little down, but this method has worked for me.
