I remember how stupid and betrayed I felt after learning my parents, whom I had no choice but to trust wholeheartedly, lied to me about Santa Claus. I struggled with it after my son was growing up, but ultimately caved in and continued with the tradition. He loved the magic of Santa, but felt very betrayed when he learned the truth, just as I did. I'm no longer a person of faith, so the Santa deception makes perfect sense. Believing in a magical being you can't see, touch, hear or prove exists is kind of a familiar jam for organized religion.
