I think telling people that alcoholics who overcome their addiction without AA are just miserable “dry drunks” is bullshit too. 😂😂 Manipulative and closed minded, almost cultish. I lost count of the times that I’ve heard “You’re not praying right”. Really??? “You have to get down on your knees.” Really? And if my unruly appetite for alcohol prevails, even after I drop all the way to my knees, then what? I wasn’t holding my hands right??? “If I don’t complete every step I am guaranteed to relapse.” Really? AA can verify this based on what? Interviewing every person on earth that’s overcome addiction?? Yeah, I obviously have 12 step issues too, but I recognize their values and acknowledge that the program has rescued countless people from a life of misery and saved lives. I intend to visit some AA meetings in the future because alcohol kicked my ass thoroughly, as it did theirs. And it seems the program has become more openminded over the years, but man, update to the times. The “our way or the highway” approach is unhelpful. Do whatever you have to do, and if it isn’t 12 step you’re not doomed for failure.
