I'm comfortable owning my past addiction to alcohol, but I choose not to make it part of my identity. I'll open up to people that seem sincere in their curiosity about why I don't drink, but keeping my past private, shields me from the ridiculous stigma that's attached to addiction. I think it really depends on your situation. If I was a business owner, doctor, lawyer or making a living where my career wouldn't be jeopardized, I would be happy to own it more. 😊 A lot of addiction writers use their real names on this platform because they're livelihoods aren't threatened by that ridiculous stigma. I have to own it cautiously.
