My paternal grandfather was an alcoholic and my father was the closest thing I have ever seen to a "high-functioning" alcoholic. I ultimately pretended to be a "high-functioning" alcoholic. (That was always a lie to me.) The prevailing opinion still seems to be that those of us that lose our way to addiction just have a weakness. Ugh....
(I hope someday to see an article about the overlooked addicts that are alone in the world. They're not injuring loved ones and their battle with addiction is solitary)
