My wealthy grandmother suffered from agoraphobia and had the resources to buy her way through after my grandfather died. She purchased brand new cars that she never drove and had all of her needs met with deliveries. Even her piano instructor did house calls; easy to pull off when the student can buy an extra grand piano for her teacher! My family dismissed her condition and even joked about it. It's tragic that she passed away with an untreated mental illness. The stigma attached to mental illness was too much for my stupid, "highborn" family to accept and her condition is never brought up all these years later,
because it was never acknowledged or accepted.
Thanks for sharing your experience. My relationship with my grandmother was strained and my brother and I were left out of her will because we're mixed race, but I was always curious about my grandmother's condition and why my family ignored it.
Very enlightening read. Thanks again!
