Peer pressure played a significant role in the development of my alcohol addiction when I was growing up. I came to the conclusion early on, that alcohol was a potentially destructive force in my life, but I ultimately caved in to peer pressure and learned to absolutely love alcohol intoxication. However, once I realized I needed to overcome the addiction, it didn't matter to me if addiction was identified or labeled as a disease or not. I needed to stop or die, so the debate wasn't relevant.
My earliest experiences with recovery date back to 1984, when 12-step programs had a choke-hold on the entire field of addiction treatment. I'm delighted to see it evolving, but I feel we're just emerging from a long period of stagnation and still have much to learn!!! As long as the disease model debate facilities an outcome of freedom, then I'm all in.
Thanks for sharing! 😎✌️
