Rational Recovery, which evolved into Smart Recovery, used to claim that most people who successfully quit drinking, do it on their own. (Many 12-steppers will take aggressive issue with that!) I eventually did as well, though it took me years. There are those that claim that AA saved them and I don't have any reason to challenge their claims, but 12-step methods weren't my thing and I'm grateful that the field of addiction and recovery is evolving.
