This is so sickening. I had a girlfriend while in my early 20s that was taken from her home by CPS because her parents were alcoholics and allowed her little sister to die after her appendix burst. We shared Native American heritage and were both exposed to the ravages of alcoholic behavior,(I experienced it on the white side of my family too) but her situation was much, much worse. After watching her little sister die, she was removed from her home and sent into the foster care system where she was raped repeatedly. She eventually had to run away because she was being tortured and ended up on the streets. She spent her teenage years living with creepy men in their 40s that just used her as their personal toy. It amazed me that she was able to talk so casually and openly about her trauma, but she never received therapy. I was in no way qualified to help her, much less, handle the relationship, but the rage I felt when she shared her experiences is still with me. She was failed miserably by the system, just like so many others. Thank you for bringing this to light. It really must be addressed.
